Dazed trying to figure out your plans with the maze of festivals this weekend? We Want Music Without Borders has a few suggestions. Albany Park World Music Festival; Festival of the Horse and Drum;Glenwood Ave Fest, Milwaukee Irish Fest ,Unisono (CANCELLED see below) and Cubano Festival. No one can tell you what festival is the BEST- in the end that’s up to you, your friends and the weather but we can help you sort out some of the music & other activities.
“ALBANY PARK WORLD FESTIVAL” is a NEW world music neighborhood fest in town following in the big footsteps of Celebrate Clark Street World Music Festival Rogers Park curated by David Chavez of Sound Culture. David has also co programmed this festival and his hand is evident in the fine selection of local music. No out of town headliners but does includes some of the best of Chicago’s “world” music. Sunday night is the big night with headliner FUNKADESI Chicago’s premiere world music band full of bhangra and funk and drums galore mixing in a delicious “desi” and Carpacho y Su Super Combo immediately before it with some hot salsa. Saturday SANGRE MICHOCANA playing regional Mexican music and also a great opportunity to dance to the sexy Brazilian beat with CHICAGO SAMBA. Also our friends DJ Mwelwa Musambacine and DJ Slo Mo spin in between sets. Along with great food and only at $5 each or $10 per family very difficult to pass up this world music festival and the Kimball Brown line stop is right there. http://albanyparkneighbors.wordpress.com/world-fest/
SUNDAY NIGHT CUBANO FESTIVAL has PALO the very popular Afro Cuban Funk Band from Miami 6:40 pm -7:40 pm. Highly recommend checking out their music on their website gopalo.com. They are one of the few Cuban bands at the festival. Sunday’s headliner is a El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico. Will Torres also at Chicago Summerdance on Sunday at 5 pm Parking is limited. SUNDAY GA at $10 were SOLD OUT online (while tickets were still available for other days) No idea what that means in terms of getting in at the gate on Sunday. Messaging the organizer for clarification but got no response.(btw: Online sales for all days has now ended) Gate tickets $15. Also be aware that front of stage seating is reserved for “only” $75 with no provision for handicapped seating. If you are on a crutch like me you are just out of luck unless you can hobble in with your own chair. Hoping PALO plays a more accommodating venue soon in Chicago! .http://thecubanfestival.com/

Milwaukee Irish Fest–the largest Irish cultural festival in North America started Thursday night and runs thru Sunday. with so many stages and bands who can keep count? These are some of my favorites: Carlos Nunez , Galician pipe player is appearing again as well as crowd favorites Gaelic Storm. We Banjo 3 from Galway appeared last year at WMF Chicago. Donal Lunny is a legend for Irish trad..http://irishfest.com/Irishfest.htm
Glenwood Ave Fest in Rogers Park with 3 small stages. This is a sweet neighborhood festival with some good music but NOT BLAM Wow of the two fests above. Bands I like are Sat. Environmental Encroachment a brass “performance arts” band–these guys are crazy fun; following them is Magic Carpet. Polkaholics are the legendary Polka band in Chicago on Sat. at 5:00. On Sunday I’d check out Le Travaillant a sweet Cajun/Zydeco band, the Henhouse Prowlers-Bluegrass. and yet another ‘world” funk band on Sunday: Opposition Party plays “AfroFunk” –http://www.glenwoodave.org/
