Global music lovers rejoice!  ZAP MAMA & ANTIBALAS; LADYSMITH BLACK MAMBAZO; PEDRITO MARTINEZ; HUGH MASEKLA & VUSI MAHLASELA;    Joe Driscoll & Sekou Kouyate; and Ani Cordero all make February appearances. Not since the World Music Festival Chicago late Sept.has Chicago had this many major globally diverse touring artists.visit.

February also welcomes the return of the Chicago Flamenco FestivalFriday Feb. 6 thru March 7 with both international  & local musicians and dancers such “La Chimi”; Sonia Sanchez, Auxi Fernandez;  and the Chicago International Salsa Congress ( Feb. 12 –Feb 15) for 3 days & 4 nights of workshops, performances and live entertainment including  dancing to live salsa orchestras and a Midwest Salsa Competition at the Westin O’Hare.

VALENTINE’S DAY  global music lovers face deliciously difficult choices.  Plan ahead so it’s not a heartbreaker;-). Congolese/Belgian Afro poly rhythm pop sensation ZAP MAMA  is doing a debut tour with  NYC’s ANTIBALAS performing as a collaboration on stage at Park West.  See a clip from one of their first shows together below. Also on Feb. 14 the popular Grammy Award winning South African LADYSMITH BLACK MAMBAZO will fill the intimate concert hall at Old Town School of Folk Music with their entrancing velvet harmonies.and warm gentle rhythms; dancing with ‘diamonds on the soles of their feet’  for 2 shows.

The Valentine’s Day dilemma for global music and dance lovers continues with the eagerly anticipated annual Brazilian Carnival Celebrations  taking place on Feb. 14~both the long established CHICAGO SAMBA’s “Love is in the Air” extravaganza at Logan Square Auditorium AND  4th Anniversary Show of the Brazilian Carnaval with SWING BRASILIERO /Passistas Samba Dance/ Grupo Axe presented by SOUND CULTURE  at Martyr’s.  Meanwhile The CHICAGO INTERNATIONAL SALSA CONGRESS is  hitting mid stride on Valentine’s.   The Salsa orchestra  following their Latin Dance performance showcase on the 14th is Raulin Rosendo & Ray De La Paz.. Chicago Flamenco Festival presents Sonia Sanchez Feb. 13, 14 & 15 doing “Le Ca (The Id)” at MCA.

Valentine’s Weekend continues  Sunday evening with Cuban percussionist Pedrito Martinez Group at City Winery presenting   2 shows.  Chicago International Salsa Congress closes with Larry Hargrove and the Latin Legends Band. .   Giving the  Valentine Weekend World Music broad shoulders is Sound Culture’s Monday Feb. 16 show with Joe Driscoll and  Sekou Kouyate at Mayne Stage.

February also sees some outstanding local bands performing.  A definite don’t miss  will be the unforgettable collaboration of  Grammy nominees  Billy Branch & the Sons of Blues with Sones de Mexico  on Feb. 21 at Old Town School of Folk Music. Chicago audiences caught an exciting glimpse of their musical explorations during Sones de Mexico 20th anniversary concert at Millennium Park (see the video below).  Fun global party for the budget minded takes place on Feb 7 when  Environmental Encroachment; Dos Santos Anti beat and New Constellations share a triple bill at Martyr’s  for only $8.   Brazilian Jazz “guy”,  Guitarist and vocalist, Luciano Antonio has his CD release Party at World Music Wednesday at Old Town School of Folk Music Feb. 18 and  Funkadesi returns to City Winery Feb. 26.
