Mole de Mayo We Want Music W/out Borders #Deelight

by Gail Dee  Mole de Mayo is THE mouthwatering; foot stompin’, hip swiveling weekend #Deelight (click on pic for videos & info) on May 23 and 24.  Featuring a competition for the “Best Mole” the Pilsen neighborhood 18th Street Development Corp is cooking up a family fun festival–advertised as free UPDATE: suggested donation of $5 which is a bargain for the entertainment as flavorful and complex as the smoky, spicy, subtly sweet delicious namesake. Pachanka Culture’s Jaime Garcia Rodriguez has curated two stages (live bands to the west ; DJ’s on the east )of music, dance plus lucha wrestling and bullriding. Both stages include talent from out of town and Chicago from noon to 9 pm or 10 pm.

The headliner on Sat. night is Chicano Batman from East LA — a popular  retro tropical blend of bossa nova, samba, funk, soul and cumbia. Also featured are San Diego’s B-Side Players with Latin reggae; Viento Callejero -a cumbia trio from LA and the popular local Crudo Tribal.

Sunday the live stage emphasis is hot rising star local bands. Dos Santos Anti -Beat Orquesta, Chicago’s psychedelic surf cumbia band just returned from Austin TX’s Pachanga Festival appearing on NPR Alt-Latin‘s radio stage – if click on the NPR link-May 22 program just aired with live music from the Fest!    !Esso! Afrojam Funkbeat has a funky groove; Son Monarcas -a blend of son jarocho & other influences; Mariachi Perla de México (from Chicago) and traditional Mexican ranchera from Monterrey, Mexico with Los Grandes de Lunares.  The colorful dancers Comparza La Explosiva de Morelos y Sus Chinelos Magicos perform both days as well as Galli Lucha Libre wrestling and Bull riding.  Saturday ends with a fire dancing ensemble!

On the east stage 18 different DJ’s. Several DJ’s featured on Future Rootz Radio will be spinning and known for mixes of  tropical bass and global remixes such as DJ Sound Culture,  DJ Harold Gonzalez AfroQbano; DJ CumbiaSazo, The Ponderers;  Rebel Betty,(( Sonorama))   as well as others.  Intriguing visiting DJ’s include Bumbac Joe from Spain;  DJ Beto (iBomba),    DJ Ali Miss Guaguis  (part of Kumbia Queers MX), DJ Mike Styles founder of Beat of All Nations (LA) (check out soundclouds above).
