By touching on the interactive picture the “Deelight” -you’ll find videos and info on artists you want to see at the Square Roots Festival. The #1 Deelight is Riot artist Hassan Hakmoun, the Moroccan Gwana trance rocker from NYC appearing on Sunday 6pm to 7pm on the North Stage. You might recall him from our World Music Festival 2014. Also on Sunday July 12 is Grammy nominated Tiempo Libre -classically trained young Cubans transplanted to Miami with a Pan American sound- 9 pm to 10 pm South Stage; Saturday: NOLA’s trumpeter and composer Kermit Ruffins early in afternoon on North Stage at 3:45 pm to 4:45 pm (you can see him on Friday at SPACE or Sat. night at Promontory also); Lost Bayou Ramblers for high energy Cajun music also early 4:45 to 5:45. Later at night in Maurer Hall check out Haitian Wesli (relocated to Montreal) at 9:45 pm playing a mix of Afro Caribbean and reggae; and on Friday July 10 Plena Libre from Puerto Rico with their big band Bomba y Plena sound. Lots of Rock n’ Roll and punkers to check out from the legendary Mekons to Urge Overkill. I’m also a sucker for Americana and roots music like Cactus Blossom; Nora Jane Struthers and the Party line; Feufollet and Chicago’s own Robbie Fulks and the Bluegrass Explosion and Tangleweed. Other stellar local acts performing include Irish fiddler Liz Carroll, Brazilian Dill Costa Quintet and Juan Rivera violinist leading a Mexican Fandango as well as LVDP Soundsystem; and Sidewalk Chalk. Square Roots Festival suggested donation is $10 for adults, $5 seniors/kids, and $20 for families presented by Old Town School of Folk Music and Lincoln Square Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce. Craft beer available too! Taking place between Montrose and Wilson on Lincoln Ave and inside Old Town School of Folk Music.
